Spring brings a new issue of DOUBLE DOUBLE with a focus on poetry, images and languages, and how media interact and communicate with each other. Holly Lee has selected six poems she recently wrote, and one of them, titled “Rosetta,” is dedicated to an octopus and her documentary filmmaker, Craig Foster. In this edition, guest artist Ximena Berecochea presents photographic works frequently associated with and deeply influenced by literature and languages. Three series of works are presented in this issue: “Little Red Riding Hood”, “The House in the House” and “Catching a Squirrel”, the latter inspired by the late Hong Kong poet Leung Ping-kwan. A dialogue between Holly and Ximena reveals some of the thought process and syntax that led to the creation of these photographs.
In the “Collection” section, we share eight stunning mixed media objects from the
Toronto artist Kai Chan. Our exploration of image and text continues with “Terrain,” a collaboration between photographer Lee Ka-sing and writer Gary Michael Dault. Across more than a dozen images, each pristine black and white photograph is accompanied by an insightful and succinct haiku, creating an irresistible pull for readers to develop their own interpretations, whether on a conscious or subconscious level.
