Heather Nicol: Two Ears and One Mouth: An Interdisciplinary Workshop on Ways of Listening

In our digitized and mediated world, this workshop will target the sounds of the human voice as the prime source material for creative play. Inexorably linked with communication, voice is an instrument of tremendous subtlety, power, and universality – and readily available to record, manipulate, and emanate or broadcast.

In our digitized and mediated world, this workshop will target the sounds of the human voice as the prime source material for creative play. Inexorably linked with communication, voice is an instrument of tremendous subtlety, power, and universality – and readily available to record, manipulate, and emanate or broadcast.

Heather Nicol’s site-specific installations include Toronto’s Allen Lambert Galleria (Arts Brookfield Canada), Union Station (Nuit Blanche), Ontario Place and “Planet Storage” (Art Spin), New York City’s Winter Garden (Arts Brookfield USA), the BAM Harvey Theatre and Sculpture Center at Roosevelt Island. In Europe her installations have been presented in Berlin (ZK/U, Kunstlerhaus Betanien, and Scotty) and in Milly, France at Chateau de Courances. Her interest in site-conditions have extended into independent curatorial projects held in decommissioned, underutilized, repurposed and educational locations, and have fostered opportunities for large groups of artists working across a wide range of disciplines.

Sign up for our Ways of Listening Workshop. This will be a unique five-day hands-on experience conducted by interdisciplinary artist Heather Nicol.

In this workshop, participants will explore deep listening through sonic experimentation, audio recording, sound editing, and playback. The workshop will culminate in a devised multi-channel sound installation created by the group. Actors, artists, vocalists, theatre devisors, podcasters, musicians, as well as technicians, researchers, and curious minds are welcome.
